The new Superman film, directed by James Gunn, underwent significant structural changes following negative feedback from test screenings. Initially prepared with a fragmented narrative format in order to remain faithful to the comic book aesthetic, the film was almost completely re-edited when it failed to receive the expected response from the audience.
The new Superman film was re-edited from the very beginning
With the adjustments made, the film abandoned its structure of progressing in sections and turned into a more classic cinema structure told in one piece. The structure presented to the audience in the test screenings of the first version progressed by dividing the story by the days of the week.
Each section opened with titles such as “Part I – Monday”, “Part II – Tuesday”. Although this structure offered a narrative language close to the comic book world, the test audience found it disjointed and disorganized. As a result, director James Gunn and the production team reconsidered the film’s narrative format.
With the complete re-editing of the plot, the film’s length was also shortened by approximately 15 minutes. These changes not only changed the structure but also the creative team in the film. The original editor has been replaced by a new name; the composer responsible for the film’s music has also been changed.
It is stated that this revision process, which guided the decisions of Warner Bros. and James Gunn, has been met with positive responses in recent test screenings. The final version of the film received higher scores from both audiences and Warner Bros. executives.
However, it is not yet known whether the film will have the same impact on the masses. In particular, it has been seen in previous examples in the cinema industry that extensive changes made according to test screenings sometimes have positive and sometimes negative results.
The film, which will have its first screening on July 11, 2025, will reveal how the audience will react to this new version. So what do you think about this production? You can share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
